Abstract

Researchers focus usually on mean differences between groups or mean changes following an intervention. But we apply research mostly to individuals, who differ from the mean of their group or who respond differently from the mean change following an intervention. Individual differences are summarized with the usual between-subject standard deviation or error in a regression model, while individual responses are summarized with a standard deviation representing variation in change scores additional to error of measurement. It is important to quantify and present these standard deviations, but more importantly, subject characteristics that might explain individual differences and responses should be measured, included in analyses as modifying covariates, and presented along with mean differences or changes.
